Photographer's Note
This is just a short distance from Yanshuo, and the field from my "harrowing work" shot is just off to the right. Black Dragon Bridge is the small bridge in the photo. I'm standing on the bridge visible in "harrowing work", waiting for the bus back to Yangshuo.
The man in the frame is poling down the river on a bamboo raft, often used for fishing or transport in the area.
The sky is hazy from a combination of two factors; one is air pollution, even this far out into the countryside, the other is water haze from the millions of wet rice fields. When the humidity is high the summer sky is often hazy and this area looked like this for much of the 11 days we were there.
Black Dragon Bridge has a high arch and wide steps, and when I walked across, a group of cows were coming the other way. I remember hearing that cows can't climb steps, apparently they can if the steps are wide ones.
The shot is sharpened,

Beautiful view, the mist make it moody and the mountains look very special and mysterious.
Very well composed.
Well done!

My first reaction: pity about the sky. You could have had an excellent shot if the sky was any other color than blown out white. I know it is impossible to control nature, but it is possible to shoot at different times of day. Maybe at sunset this location would have been magical with nice light here and there. Your composition skills are nice, just the technical side needs a little work. Anyway, well done for the conditions, but for me just does not work as well as it should.

Ian, judging from this shot and your "harrowing" shot, this region has some stunningly beautiful scenery. You've captured it well here - sky a little washed out but the composition is excellent.

I was in Yangshuo in July 2000. I didn't see you!
Too bad it's hazy, but the scenery is still magnificent. I just loved walking there and meeting the locals.
This is a very good combination of nature and the village. Nice reflection of that man on the raft. Well done.

Great shot...really beautiful. But somehow, the edges of the mountains, especially the frather ones, are a bit oversharpened.
Anyway. I like this a lot. Top-rate colors!

Great view from this Black Dragon Bridge, too bad the sky... etc. I like the way tth mountains are gradually getting dimmer. The land in bewtween is now so flat and the river so beautifully calm. The raft is perfect in it.

wow... weird hills! So 'pointy'. sad to read about polution in such a beautiful place, but it does create a beautiful misty atmosphere in your photo. Do you also have a close up of the bamboo-man?

Beautiful picture - very tranquil. The layering of those mountains is well captured, and the shapes are great. Good composition with lots of space adding to the peaceful feel.

Calm, quiet, resting, beautiful...and very nicely composed. I like the river as large foreground and how mountains become shadows, stepwise, until horizon. A lot of depth also. Really beutiful Ian.

Very nice. The sky is actually attractive as it is, though I've read some said it was blown out. I think it adds to the surreal look of this scene. It helps makes the silhouettes of the steep sided hills that much stronger. And all the levels of the silhouettes is great. Each hill is clear yet not. The lone man on the water creates a nice wake and point of scale. And it leads us back into the path of water under the bridge. It seems to be soft on the focus since it is sharpened but that's probably another result of the hazy conditions. Nicely composed, though. You made good results despite the conditions and as I said may have even added to the view. Good job.

I agree with pamastro that the sky is fine just as it is, especially since that is what the sky actually looks like in the region, as noted by the photographer. The hazy sky contributes to the ethereal quality of the mountains that contrasts so powerfully with the clearly defined images in the foreground, the most prominent of which is the single figure on the raft. The beautifully arched bridge is off center which contributes to the delight when the eye that is naturally drawn to the mountains in the distance finally discover it. I love this photo. Thank you for sharing it with us.

This is a nice shot ian. I like the space you have included; none of it works against the mood of the photo. I have taken the liberty of making a workshop for you, I hope you likr like it :)

I like the realism of this shot, the white sky allows the full range of shades in the shadowy mountains to be appreciated as even the lightest one contrasts with the sky. The human figure is dwarfed by the majestic nature.

Hi Ian - lovely shot of these strange mountains, the man is also very well placed. When I was there in november the haze was even stronger, air pollution is a permanent thing nowadays all over eastern China, even the countryside.
