Intro
I was born in Madagascar 27 years ago, in a very multicultural family: my father is from Madagascar and my mother from Belgium. I have lived 18 years in Madagascar and then left this country to attend a university in Belgium. This has allowed me to see the world through different eyes, and to live in two different environments: the southern as well as the northern hemisphere.
I must say that my parents have created an environment that has strongly inspired me and oriented me towards what I am doing now, and the education I have received as well as the environment in which I grew up, have given me the tools for a critical mind, and this will to change. I have recently read that wonderful and so truthful statement of Mahatma Ghandi: “You must be the change you want to see in the world”.
The idea of Art in All of Us was moulded by Anthony Asael (co-founder of Art in All of Us) and myself, based on our own experiences, education, and the values we believe in, given our own education and experiences. I have always wanted to make a difference and work for development projects leading to better lifestyles and standards of living. Being a woman, and having lived most of my life in a matriarchal society and culture, I strongly believed that the change and improvement should be implemented mostly through women. As far as I can remember, my mother has always worked, and is still working, for development projects, trying to give people opportunities to improve their standards of living, and to change minds and ancestral traditions that had strong ecological and development impacts… until I met Anthony and realized the potential in children… that children are the adults of tomorrow, and if we (today’s adults) are responsible for the situation of the world today, the children are responsible for the way the world will be tomorrow, and the way they see the world and the different nations today will influence the way the world will be in the future, as they are the agents of change, and the architects of the future.
If I had to identify one particular event that has given me the inspiration, apart from my education and experiences, it would be the book written by Paulo Coelho “The Alchemist”, which I believe has been a source of inspiration for many people worldwide.
As for my professional experience, I have studied economics, and have worked as an external auditor. Although this professional experience seems a hundred miles away from what I am currently doing, I must reckon that the management and organizational skills, as well as accounting skills I have acquired through these years of study and work are extremely useful and necessary for Art in All of Us.
I would not define myself as an artist, but it is true that photography has opened doors of creativity, and has given me new ways of expressing myself and the way my eyes see my environment. As far as I can remember I have always been attracted by photography, and willing to explore all the possibilities this form of art offers you, but it is not until recently that I could afford to give myself the means of developing it and to dedicating myself to it. Although my work is mostly instinctive, as I have not taken any formal photography classes, Anthony has given me the technical skills I was lacking. Working for Art in All of Us and visiting schools and children all over the world have given me an incredibly rich photographic experience in so many different environments, no formal and academic class could give me.
