Photographer's Note

While they are working at the expanse that is the Akamba Handicraft Cooperative in Mombasa, the woodcarvers create a lot of shavings from the carved animals, masks, figures, walking sticks, nativities and salad servers that they are making.

However, nothing at all goes to waste and the offcuts of rosewood, ebony and neem are put into sacks and sold as firewood. This way, extra money is made and ploughed back into the cooperatives to enable them to but more wood to create their exquisite, unique pieces of art.
