Photographer's Note
A friend of mine was doing some remodeling work on a farm near my hometown and he told me about the herons. I was thrilled at the prospect of seeing SOME kind of bird besides Canadian geese. There were a number of them I saw flying around and I finally caught this guy looking for some lunch. I guess there are herons in West Virginia from time to time, but not as many I saw at this place. It was beautiful, too. A winding waterway, open fields, sunny sky. It was a pleasure just to be out and the birds were an added bonus.

Nice and sharp considering you were shooting at 300mm. Did you use that new monopod for this one? Though the exif data says it was about 10:13 PM.. it feels to me more like late morning or close to noon.

Shelly, this is quite gorgeous. I've seen an exceptional amount of sandhill cranes this summer, and American White Pelican. But though I've read of blue herons, I've never seen one. So thanks for sharing, and now for the details :)
You've caught the full form well, and the color aptly to show us why this heron is so named. Nicely composed between the trees, and a nice view of the mirror-like surface of this pond. At first I thought you had too much detail on the left, but stepping back and seeing the total effect, I'd have to say you did it just right. Nice work.

Hello Shelly,
This is one of the finest nature shots I've ever seen. The composition with the blue herron in the lower corner, the lush greenery reflected in the water, and an iridescent quality in the image. It deserves a lot more than two points for the photo, even from a life-long professor who does not believe in grade inflation.
Warmest regards,

Hi Shelly,
Beautiful capture of this elusive subject. They do look very majestic and noble. I love the green warer and cotton from the summer trees which help to highlight your lovely subject. There is a lake near my home where there is a roockery where hundereds of these birds can be seen in the morning or evening. I must get out there in my kayak to shot them.
Regards, Tom

Hello Shelly
Very beautiful image of this héron solitary. I find that the water level would have to gain in clearness. That gives with dimensions "a draft" to the image. It is a pity because the subject is really well and the composition too.
Cordially.

Poor little heron is quite lost in this composition!
The composition is good, the colours are excellent, but the bird is a little small

Hello Shelly,
A nice shot of that blue heron. Nice, soft colors and lush green. The heron, being the main subject of the picture, is too small in my opinion. I did a workshop to try to give you an idea of what I have in mind. Please bear in mind that I did not work on the original.
Greetings from bitter cold Luxemburg.

Shelly, cette photo est magnifique avec une lumière et des couleurs superbes. La présence du héron à un point fort est le plus de ce cliché.

Hi Shelly,
a wonderful photo ... I like the composition as well as the mood (it´s difficult to describe ... but all these shades of green and also the light are wonderful ... and the blue heron amidst). I firstly saw the other photo of this uncommon visitor: in the other photo, his "blueness" is definitly better visible - but nevertheless, I like this one better because of the light.
There are herons in some parts of my country - but there aren´t any blue herons.
