Photographer's Note
It is ironic that the architectural gem of Venetian religious architecture owes its existence to a terrifying epidemic that struck during the Italian Baroque Period. The Bubonic Plague had been ravaging Venice, and by 1630, when it had wiped out a third of Venice’s estimated population of 150,000, the political leaders of the city made a pledge to God: if He would stop the plague, they would show their gratitude by building a defining edifice to honor the Virgin Mary. And indeed, as the plague subsided, the authorities awarded architect Baldassare Longhena the commission to build a great basilica at the tip of Dosuro, on land gained by driving over 1.5 million pylons into the swamp. (The precise location is at intersection of St. Mark’s Basin with the Grand Canal.) The construction continued for 58 years, its architect having passed away six years before the church’s completion in 1688. Venetian scenes like the one in the photograph, with the sun setting over its canals and bridges, its domes and spires must have inspired two of its favorite sons — Vivaldi (1678-1741) and Canaletto (1697-1768)— in creating their masterpieces in music and paintings, respectively.
August 6, 2006 was the evening before disembarkation from the Crystal Symphony on which I had been giving lectures. It was time to return to the ship and pack for the flight back home to the United States. The view is that of the Grand Canal, with the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Salute (Church of Saint Mary of Health and Salvation) with its prominent dome as the focal point of the image. Despite the extremely limited light, and the vibrations in the small water taxi that we took from San Marco to the pier at Maritime, where the ship was docked, I was able to obtain two or three successful images out of half-a-dozen that I shot. I had set the effective film speed on my camera on the maximum, ISO-1600, sensitive enough to “film a black cat inside a coal mine,” but some pixilation resulted.
The surrounding mat/frame was created in Photoshop, with the white line suggesting a bevel; the dark gray color of "the mat" came from a dark area of the image, a common practice among framers.
This image will be placed in a new group theme, DOMES. I Welcome others to contribute.

Merhaba Hocam,

Hello Bulent,
Beautiful after sunset photo with just enough light left to capture the most important contours of the buildings but leaving out all the details. The last colors available in the sky make a very nice contrast to the almost black & white of the buildings adding a great atmosphere.
You managed to get a very good composition from the moving watertaxi and sharp as well.
Well done.

Hi Bulent,
the sky is stunning .. and evocative in this place .. the water beautiful .. the buildings live in that strange place between detail and silhouette that no matter how I deal with it I never feel like I have done the right thing .. (although I would love it if our friends in that modern boat were thrown into silhouette) ..
wonderful image.

a very nice shot Bulent. i am sorrie that I did not critique your last pirate shot. Mostly I go to the landscape shots. Oh the quality of your pirate was very good and the note was nice to. This is a very nice shot too, it's a difficult one, against the light, but you did do it very good here. Maybe you could use a highlight tool for some light into the dark parts of the shot, but thats personal, good photo, good job, good note.

Hi Bulent.
A really dramatic shot with a great effect. the only problem is you have a few spots on your image, in the sky above the ball on the left. They're a little distracting. Maybe you could clone them out on your original. Not a big problem. Well done.

Hi Bulent. I like this story about the political leaders making a vow to God to build an edifice for salvation from the plague. Very interesting indeed. I can imagine that it must have been quite the challenge to capture this photo with such a high ISO setting. Nevertheless it is a very good image with a wonderful view of the sunset sky.
I took upon myself to do a workshop for you. The reason for this workshop is bring up a few darker shadows so the image would portray how the human eye would see the scene. What pixels like to do when it comes to estimating exposure settings is to calculate the bright sky against the darker shadows which often results in the darker shadows being underexposed. So I adjusted that for you in the workshop. I can see that you had a great time there in Venice. Thanks Bulent for the great photo and info on this place. Cheers ...PJE

I like the workshop that PJE did for this photo. Before I saw his comment, I photo-shopped the original using "auto color" and "sharpen more," but his result is even better than mine. The original posting is a great photo though. Great compo, POV, sky, and the addition of the water taxi is a great touch (although i do agree with jmcl that in a perfect world, that boat would be a silhouette!) This original post definitely stands on it's own, but the sharper version is even more satisfying to me.

Hello Bülent,
Congratulations! A wonderful view masterly captured with your compo. On my ignorance of Art History, I feel it a bit like a classical painting, although it isn't a common view of Venice. The lighting and the sense of depth much reinforced by the sunset sky is impressive and beautiful.
Very well done.

It's very impressive to achieve such a wonderful image from a water taxi. There is no motion blur and the colours are beautiful. Even though you used a high ISO the noise is minimal. Paul's WS has brought more detail from the shadows, but silhouettes are often the charm of sunset images. Good work.

Hi Bulent,
Even though they appear as silhouettes the shapes of these buildings set the context at once, it can't be anywhere else as Venezia... except Las Vegas maybe ;-)
A nice low light picture, it's a small detail but I believe it tilts to the left.

Hello Bulent,
This is really one of the nicest photos you have put on TE. The colours of the sky, their reflexions in the Grand Canal, the two motor boats, the semi silhouetted Chiesa di Santa Maria della Salute, with just enough details in the shadows, all these elements make a great picture. I also enjoyed reading your very informative note. The plague you mention makes me think of the London Great Plague in 1665 and the Great Fire that followed in 1666. After all St Paul's Cathedral was built after a similar catastrophe. Your picture and your note prove once more how useful and interesting Internet sites such as TE are.
Friendly greetings

Merhaba Bulent,
You have presented a tough one again. The sky and the fact that it is Venice make this photo appealing. At first I felt that the buildings were on the dark side and they lacked sufficient detail. I thought about possible fixes: could have used neutral grad filter, or PP perhaps. But then as I kept staring, my eyes became adjusted to the shadows, and it actually started looking fine. And very fine it is.
Best wishes,
Hakan

Most certainly one of the best pictures of S.M.D.S I've seen. The light is moody & so is the atmosphere. What's more remarkable is you've shot this from a boat in the choppy waters. Bravo. Another classic shot of Venice. Again, great composition. Very nice sky also. This photo is outstanding for being taken in a boat and the ISO-1600 "pixilation" does not detract from the photo whatsoever. Truthfully, I think it gives the photo a little character. A real life photo, not a studio shot. You saw the black cat and pushed your equipment to its max to get the photo. Great work. Great shot. Great note.

Hello, Bulent -
This was on the featured release screen when TE came up, so I had to take a look! It looks to me like you cleaned up the pixilation - Gaussian blur? I find the tilt of the water a bit disturbing; it looks like the canal is draining out lower left!
But a great capture and print under difficult conditions. The colorful sky and the deeply shadowed church make a great combination.

Hello Bulent,
The picture is alive with warm light of the sunset showing it colorful brilliance across the sky, onto the buildings and over the water against the otherwise contrasting gray shadows. Small choppy ripples in the water of the Grand Canal give the sense of motion. You captured well the mood of the early evening. It is lovely.
Warm wishes,
Betty
