Photographer's Note
There is a little park in the middle of Yangshuo that has one of the limestone peaks, with stairs and a viewing platform at the top. This is the view looking out towards the Li River (Li Jiang). Upstream to the left is Guilin and downstream to the right is the view from my photo Bend in the River
The sky is blown out, I tried correcting it in PS but couldn't get enough colour to do anything useful. My old camera is now an oversized paper weight; lousy meter, and slower than a glacier.

Very interesting point of view at Yangshuo. I do not think I climb that hill before so next time I go I have to try. I like all the many detail here. Good work!

Maybe you could have cropped the sky a bit more. ANyway, I really like the way the town is shown in the context of the surrounding (amazing) geomorphology here. It's so extraordinary it looks unreal.

Hey Ian, cool shot here. Yeah, the sky is rather dull, but the view makes up for it. I like how the river sort of divides the photo into two parts. Anyway, good shot.

Real interesting image and explanations, Ian !
The opposition between the civilization of the city in the foreground and the wildness of these very strange mountains in the background is very impressive.
Great composition.
Well done !

Yes, its a pity that the sky is washed out, but the view definietly makes up for it. Those mountains on the horizon are magnificent. Thanks for sharing this with us, it's right in the spirit of TE.

This is a pretty effective shot Ian. I really like how the city is positioned between the peaks (kharsts?) and the background adds in that it is attractive, yet doesn't draw attention away from what is closer to us. The problems with this shot are primarily equipment related I think. A wider lens would be nice here, and I think the answer to the sky issue is not so much to do with the camera, but what is called for here is some sort of graduated filter, either neutral density or perhaps a grad blue would work as well. Good shot Ian.

Indeed a great landscape. I like the way the town is somewhat bordered in this landscape. I think a bit more cropping of the sky could help, but it's still a great picture and your angle makes it work

Nice shot. I've been to Yangshuo a few times (also in July 2000) but didn't see this view yet. I may post my own aerial view one of these days so hopefully I will see you visiting me.
Sky blown out or not, the fantastic landscape is still there.

Wonderful photo. I love this kind of city scenes in combination with a great landscape. A tighter crop at the top to reduce the sky would make the photo nicer, I think, even if it meant that the top of the hill on the right would be removed. Anyway, the city looks great and very sharp. Great job!
