Photographer's Note
Rice farming involves an enormous amount of labour. After cleaning out the canals to get water, flooding the fields and ploughing the ground they still have lots to do. This stage uses a harrow, like a giant comb, to break up the rough clumps of earth the plough turned over; this is often done a few times until the soil and water mixture is very mushy but has no lumps. The fields are then smoothed out and the rice seedlings planted by hand.
This was taken near Black Dragon Bridge, just outside Yangshuo. Another man was ploughing a few fields away, and two more people were harvesting their ripe field between them.
Minor cropping and sharpened.

Ian, your photos of Yangshuo make me really want to go back to China asap! I love the green colors. The title is just perfect for the subject.

Nice shot. When I was in Yangshuo I spent a day taking pictures of these farmers working the fields...a wonderful subject to work with. You've captured a nice moment here and you got pretty close as well, but the fact that the man's face is in darkness takes away from the shot. I know it's difficult to get details in the face given the hat that he wearing, but here it is part of the composition so the detail should be there. You might want to do some Contrast Masking / curves adjustments on the original...I'm sure you can bring it out more.

good daily scene, a man at work, hard work. problems? maybe the compo is too centered a bit and this white sky is not the greatest one and the green rice is too soft - not very detailed - old digicam?
but it is a nice picture, good scene, colorful and real

A good composition and I like the moment too!
A scene so far away from the machinery that nowadays is almost everywhere!
Nice shot!

Very nicely done here, I like the composition and the shot, great timing and I like the mud itself, I tried to get a similar shot in Yunan, but failed and I didnt have a digital camer then.
Thanks for sharing

Nice to see how green Yangshuo is in summer. The fields were dry, yellow/brown, dusty & barren when I was there in January '99.
A fill in flash may have helped here. I may try a ws.

Interesting scene, and nice comp, but I agree with Chris, some detail in the face would have been good here.

Nice colors Ian and an overall very good photo. Personally,I think it could be a little sharper and I would like to see more details in his face, perhaps a little burning would work? Also, I would like to see the camera aimed slightly more to the left so there is more room in front of the man and buffalo than there is behind them. Good note and a good capture of rural Asian life.

Voilà exactement la photographie que j'ai loupé à Séram en Indonésie, elle est superbe et les rizières sont si vertes. Tu m'arraches presque une larme de regret d'avoir été si mauvais. Merci pour ta photo et un grand bravo/jr

A real keeper from your trip. All the detail in this shot tell a timeless tale. Well done technically too.

The colors are very very good. the details in the face s not important. Give the man his privacy. I like the candid momnet you've captured. Very good work.

Nice picture! it gives us a great look on the reality in Asia. The people there are doing lot of work and they still do it by hand.
For the photograph, I think it could be better if it has more space between the head of the cow and the frame on the left.

Great photo. Reflects very clear the work on a farm in china. Great subjects and nice plane. I suppose you was careful walking by.

You captured a nice rural daily life scene with beautiful colors
Interesting contrast between the warm tones of the mud, the buffalo and the vivid green in the background.
