Photographer's Note
Continuation on my theme about the TE members I admire. To know what this is all about please read the introductory notes on the first post of the series.
Light is the heart of photography. Everybody knows that. 'The ability to see subtle changes in the light on a subject is a key to professional quality work and is part of what makes a photograph not a snap shot.' Back in the XVII century there was a guy named Rembrandt who also was aware of this. His purposeful use of light and shade to create atmosphere in his works took him beyond the conventional. He even used it not only to create drama, but also to compose the entire painting. Light was his salvation.
This brief prologue has only the purpose to introduce my next guest. I am always playing with him, saying that he is the reincarnation of the old Flemish masters. But the simple truth is that he really is… Here is a proof of that. And here. And here...
If the challenge of all good photography is the control of light, Henk is surely one of the best photographers this world has to offer. Other than that, he has an impressive ability to compose and frame the reality in a way that always enriches the photographed subject. His technical skills are tremendous and you will have to work hard to find a single imperfection in one of his pictures.
Having said that, the picture I present here is a thousand miles below his water surface but, in my heart, it’s the best I can do. Looking at the Historic Village of Sortelha bathed with the late afternoon light I couldn’t escape thinking of the Flemish Master…
So thanks my friend for being a constant source of perseverance and inspiration. It was because guys like you that I started to photograph landscapes in the last 6 months. Believe it or not, but before that never I pointed my SLR to wide natural scenery... I am counting on you to help me becoming a better photographer so please be hard on your critiquing. As usual. :)

Fantastic looking image here Luis, the scene looks like something that could only be painted, and too good to be true. Colours are fantastic as well as the quality. Well done.

It is funny, Luis, that from your great series of tributes to others I learn much more about you and your attitude towards photography than about them, as all these photos are first and foremost yours. Excellent landscape, and what else to expect from you, a master of lanscape photography. Very good curved progression which takes us gradually through the whole frame from the FG greenery to the rock with the old tower and then to the hills on the left. Great light but this goes without saying. Maybe a little too tight crop on these houses on the right.
Cheers
Alexander

exceptional,
unusual,
mastery,
close-to-unreal,
this is a gorgeous work, luis, you really reached the limits of "beauty" with this landscape (indeed some old school flamish touch could be seen here);
the colours are simply unbelievable;
best wishes, j.

bonjour Luis,

Hello Luis,
Marvelous image :) Warm light on the left and cold light on the right make an incredible couple.
Best regards, Laurent.

Espectacular.

Hello my friend ;-)
What can i say after such honest and beautiful words. I really not deserve this. It sounds like that very picture of me is perfect, well i don't think it is.
Taking good ones is a struggle, every time and time again, you probably know that feeling.
The landscape is as it is, making the best of it is all we can do. Showing something that is only there for a short period of the day, waiting for the best light, sometimes it doesn't come at all....home again with nothing on your card, how disapointing can that be.
But when the circumstances are good then you are happy like a little child with a birthday present.
In the old days on slide film, the Velvia was and still is the master. Now in this digital era we come home, see them on the screen and think...no not really, it was better then what i see now. So there is work to do, a lot of work..!!
You have to paint, with highlihts and shadows in a way that the picture comes to life, just as the way you saw it when you pushed the button. Just like the way the old masters did...painting with light..!!!
And yes i paint my pictures, just as you did in yours, and you know how difficult that can be ;-)
Nothing is what it seems...i showed you, but it is the art of showing in a minimum way the difference between a nice one, a good one, and a perfect one. And looking at myself, after all these years of photography, i am only proud on less then 10 pictures, all the others could be better....so i keep on trying.
Your tributes are very nice, i highly respect mine, but at the end...don't forget yourself....you belong under us...!!!
With kind regards,
Henk

How do I love this photo? Let me count the ways. 1. Has an Old Portuguese castle. 2. Taken during the "golden hour" of photography. 3. It has the moon in it, and it looks great. 4. Its what I call a grand landscape (meaning it shows the whole entire countryside, all encompassing) which are the hardest to pull off. 5. It's dedicated to Henk, who is one of my favorite photographers. 6. The color of the light hitting the distant hillside complements the color of the sky (orange/blue). 7. It's got great clouds. 8. You have lightened the shadow areas, letting us see the nice buildings etc. 9. Shows a place I've never seen before.

Hi Luis, I think you are showing us a glimpse of heaven here! The light is simply exquisite and divine. Lovely composition again as well of course and marvellous saturated colours, love them! Great tribute to Henk, but again this photo stands out as another pearl from you! It's so beautiful it touches deep in the soul! Sabine

Speechless Luis. The quality of the light is so good. So good. It actually reminds me of HDR photography, was there any pp tricks here? Because the light is so good that it almost looks unreal.

Hi Luis, (Jarod i will call you cause you are a real cameleon ;) ), i saw this one yesterday and i was totally amazed by the result of this shot. Yes perhaps in a way it looks like Floydian's touch but it's from you, you have tremedoux skills, you achieve a great PP there, colors are marvelous and the POV is a master one.
All my congratulations, this is almost genius all your usual suspect serie :)
... Henk loves to put another frame after the white one ;)

Hello Luis,
