Photographer's Note
Can you FEEL the mood of this amazing place??!!
Wow... i can tell you: this house is really something!! I have founded it by mistake past month (december) and toke a few shots at daylight...then, past week had the oportunity to pass nearby by night and on the full moon day (or close...don´t know exactly when it was but looks full to me :))))
After arriving home (steel shaking my legs and and with my heart beating fast :)))) i did my homework and went to discover this place history since this is a outsanding abandoned building, the most spooky i saw in my life...because of its arquitecture, because of the way the elements play together (the cross, the shadows, the silhouettes, the trees, the bushes, the broken wall...)...because of the strange noises you start to "imagine" a few minutes after you arrived the place...well, because everything!!!
I found that this house belonged to Aristides Sousa Mendes, a portuguese (or world if you like...) HERO, since he was a portuguese consul in Bordeus (France) at the 2nd World War time...well he became a hero since while he was working on this consulate, he signed thousands of «passports» for the Jews to escape from Hitler´s carnage...
Then he obviously had to face Salazar forces in Portugal, since he was pursued and punished by the portuguese regime and ended his life in misery and pain, only because he saved thousand of jews of dying by Hitler´s hands...
In this house he and his wife had received hundred of jews in escape...nowadays this is what rests from a fabulous building and history :(
As it hapened when he was alive, nowadays the portuguese governments still haven´t done any diserved tribute to this man´s work in favor of human basic rights :(
but in the place here, we can see a posted sign that says "Future Instalations of the Aristides Sousa Mendes Foundation" :))) Which can be a sign that finally this men will have his work rewarded...
But the main reward from this, i know what it is: the thousands of people that where able to keep their lives and human rights :))
Croped on the bottom to eliminate some trafic signs along the wall, sharpened a bit and runed on NeatImage (my first try on this software: thanks Jose Elias:)))

I know what you wanted to get here, but the moon's really in an awkward place : sometimes less is better but i understand it was difficult to restrain from trying to get both the moon and the cross.
i think you already had a very good pic with the cross and the house in the background, may be you should have tried to move on your left to get the moon in a better place...or even a wider framing might have improved that...

I agree on the fact the moon is too much in the corner, but... how can one imagine such a place without a full moon ? ;-)
Your pic is so good to me that I will soon forget this detail.
Very interesting note, thank you for having spent time in getting information.

Cool picture. Very, very cool story in your note!
I love your subject! I just wish the exposure was better so I could see more detail. Perhaps a blended digital exposure would have helped bring out details selectively in your pic (please see the forum topic on Blended Exposures in the tips section). Also I wish you hadn't cropped so close to the moon, it doesn't help your composition.
Anyways, I look forward to seeing more of your pics!!!

I'm looking for the werewolf and I can't find it. What a spooky place. Personally I don't mind the moon in that corner, however it's the only white element whereas everything else is yellow and orangee so it might attract too much attention to something that is accessory to the image and not the main motive. Nevertheless, it's an incredible shot of what should be a national, no an universal monument. For a solution to the moon in this corner as mentioned by others, maybe by making a big frame it could add some space between the moon and the border of the image. No time for now to do a WS.

The photo is at least impressive!
I like all your choices.
On the other hand Luko's comments make me wonder, if a series of photos round the house could have produced a great portfolio...
Since i envy you for having such a perfect photographic paradise i expect more to come from you... ;-)

Spooky and eerie mate. Good discovery. It's such a shot and the main reason to the mood should be the moon !!! Exposure's good.

You succeeded in making a photograph with a very special atmosphere. With the atmosphere you wanted us to feel. Details loss or not appering is a detail! You have done a great shot IMHO.

It is an interesting note. And shot with atmosphere! About the upper right moon, I support this arrangement. Composition just like stage set scene!Although it is dark in a screen and the boundary of a night sky and a building is ambiguous, I think that it is also good.

WOOOW! I'm proud of you for going back in the dark! What a spooky place! Where to begin.. of course the full moon with that bit of cloud is perfect, the light on the cross is weird, but also a gift! It's great that the house is mostly in the dark, makes it even more desolate and spooky. The low point of view is really good too. Great one, well done!

You really got the right mood here Marco. Just missing the werewolf! Why don't you go back and see if you can spot one ;-o
Well composed, fine lightsetting and a good colour balance. Your story is really interesting. Thanks!

You've captured the mood! You've chosen the right angle and perspective. You've composed it very nicely! The cross, the moon...they all are in the right place. IMHO, a tighter crop at the bottom will make this picture even more powerful. Congratulations.

Absolutly fabolus shot Marco. One you should be proud of. One i wish i had taken my self.
You really managed in getting a haunted feeling in to this photo. Both composition and light conditions are right. It was a great idea to use difrent exsposure values, almost always do that my self. You can try and blend the difrent photos toghter in Photo shop to get the details of the moon that you wanted.
Thanks for taking the time and for sharing the story behind this house and the man who lived there.

Wow!!! Scary photo. Great atmosphere.
Really Really Good. The lighting and positioning of the various parts of the picture is excellent. I like the light falling on the cross and the moon on the right. Very good.
Excellent note too. 1 of my main reasons for joining TE. Thank you for this excellent capture and note.

It DOES look haunted. It's as if the crucifix is doing no good for this place. Nice mood, and lovely composition. I like the moon and the crucifix in extreme places.

Hi! I just registered and became a new member of TrekEarth after viewing the impressive pictures of the haunted house in Cabanas de Viriato, Viseu! That house was my grandfather's house (Aristides) and I never thought of it nor saw it as a haunted house, so it truly is a fascinating new perspective to see it in this way! I dont know what my family will think of it but I am impressed.
I never saw nighttime pictures of the house.
Adding the moon view was more inspiring to me than "haunting". The name of the house is called "Passal" and it has been in a state of abandon for close to 50 years now but I dont know if there are any strange inhabitants there such as.....ghosts?? (the ghost of Aristides???)
Thank you for the photos (from Eagle78?)and hope to see more of them. I am enjoying all of the Portugal and world pictures on TrekEarth!

Oi!

I had a feeling I had seen and critiqued this photo already. But apparently I haven't. Or maybe I have. I guess that's just part of the spooky quality of it. A truly haunting image. I would trade a lot of mine for one like this. But if I were there, would I shoot or run, that's the question?

I knew the story of this HERO, Aristides Sousa Mendes, and I am so happy to see those facts told here along with such a great photo.
After writing the previous lines I've noticed that his grandson saw this photo
Absolutely incredible. What better example of what I wrote in my profile about the golden age of digital photography ?
About the "sign that finally this men will have his work rewarded", I would be more than sceptical.
Just look at the hate propaganda campaign from the media against Jews (today's example : Mel Gibson's film) ...

This powerfully conveys what Quevedo y Villegas referred to as "despojos de habitacion." After reading the fascinating note, I find the photo even more astounding, capturing what is really a monument to undeserved oblivion. The composition is disconcertingly asymmetric. I don't mean that as a defect as much as something like Mannerist painting, which apprehends the world as a state of imbalance, or even decomposition. Or, as Quevedo wrote:
"y no hallé cosa en qué poner los ojos
que no fuese recuerdo de la muerte."

What a picture and what an history !!! You can be happy because the name of Aristides Souza Mendes is not totally forgotten. Effectively, I live in a street named A. de Sousa-Mendes,in France. I did not know who he was, and I'm glad to learn a bit about him.
Your picture is stunning, as the story ! Very good job !

This is a great shot of the building in question, and it certainly does have a lot of atmosphere. The colours are interesting, and I personally do like the Moon being there. However, I also have to agree with some other commentators that the composition as shown is a bit odd. I think it would look better overall if there were more space at the top of the photo. But still, way to capture the place!

and i loved reading your note, so interesting about Mendes, who certainly deserves to be well known for what he did. but most of all, i enjoyed reading how you were affected by your visit to this place at night "steel shaking my legs and and with my heart beating fast :)))" -- between your words and this haunting photograph, you have made the experience come alive for me! i would love the opportunity to shoot this myself! i think ;)
many thanks for sharing!
