Dawn slips with tranquility over the surface of the pond. The advancing sunrise slips in shafts through the trees to the East, just moments before its crests their top limbs. Its arrival warms the waters at our local nature preserve, sending mists, dense as cloud and smoke, upward.

To give a further sense of the surroundings: Just outside our frame the first ducks of the day will soon glide out to break their fast. The leaves, now starting to turn amber and gold as the mercury dips into the 40s overnight, glisten with dew and damp.

The morning is crisp and clear, with the promise of warmth. And the feeling, being there, is almost as if creation has been born afresh.
