Photographer's Note
Near the end of October, it was still balmy until it suddenly snowed and turned cold over night. Then it was foggy for a few days, so I decided to go out and see what there was to see. I found many things, among them these reeds growing in a nearby marsh.
I've been studying photographs that use a lot of negative space enthusiastically. I thought this might be a useful thing to learn, so here is an early attempt. I did no color shifting, though I did brighten the photo considerably.

Succeeded experiment I'd say! fantastic color, fantastic composition and the 'empty' space is just beautiful.

I agree with all the above. The colour is sensational and it's a 'dreamy' composition. Fantastic!

Very simple pic, it reminds me some of Olli's.
With that kind of image the challenge is to
1-get the perfect positionning into the frame : you chose quite a classical rules of thirds which you couldn't go wrong with (this is maybe the only -minor- weakness of your image, couldn't you find a more original position?)
2- streamline the info while having enough captured to evoke the subject : pulling up brightness you simplified the image but your subject is still clearly understandable.
3- output interesting mood and colors : done IMO...

I like this sort of minimalist composition. The negative space works well here. The snow on the reeds is a bonus.

I like minimalist images and your first attempt is surely a success. I like it a lot even if this kind of blue is not my favorite one. Another composition that would be nice would be to crop half of this pic, that is the part above the reeds. It would make a nice rectangular pic and the wrinkles on the water would be more obvious. But could you call it a negative space picture then ?

Wonderful color of the water, and great "disapearing" into infinity.
Well well done, David.

Wow! I don't have much to add to the others. I love the color -- so strong and well-saturated. The composition is excellent. I especially like the reflection in the shimmery part of the water. Beautiful!

Well not a bad shot this for a first try! what am i saying this is simply brilliant right down to the colour.
Copy of questions though it being a 707 did you use one of the other light meter readings say tungsten light available on the 707 or was it the cold giving the effect, I know that I get a bluey cast to pictures taken in cold conditions, to such an extent that it has to live inside my jacket till imeadiatly need to take a picture.
any way god picture how ever you got it , wellseen ;0))))#
posted this earlier but it doesnt seem to have made the transfer to new server

Very interesting result. I like your experiments professor Sidwell! :)
It would be nice to compare with the 'unbrightened' shot.
There is a strong feeling of abandon in the image...
