Photographer's Note

This is the Gallery of Columns in Hagia Irene, which is on the south side of the building.

After the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans, the church was not converted into a mosque but was used as loot and gun depot (Harbiye Warehouse) for a long time. In 1846, the first collection of artifacts of Turkish museology was exhibited and in 1869 it became the country's first official museum under the name of Müze-i Hümayun (Imperial Museum). The weapons collection was reorganized and it served as the first Military Museum between 1908 and 1930.

Untill recently, the Hagia Irene has served mainly as a concert hall for classical music performances, due to its extraordinary acoustic characteristics and impressive atmosphere. Many of the concerts of the Istanbul International Music Festival have been held here every summer since 1980. It is currently under renovation and partially open as a museum.
