5 The Puerta de Alcalá is one of the five old royal gates that gave access to the city of Madrid.
The gate gave access to those travelers who formerly entered the town from France or Aragon.Nowadays it is a monumental gate that is located next to the Cibeles Fountain and the Retiro Park. It was built by order of Carlos III to replace another previous door that existed since the 16th century. The design and work belongs to the Italian architect Francesco Sabatini. Other projects by Spanish architects competed with Sabatini: Ventura Rodríguez and José of Hermosilla, the design of Sabatini finally being personally chosen by the King.
It is a neoclassical door with a monumental appearance similar to the Roman Arches of Triumph, it was erected facing east in 1778.
Since its inception, it has undergone various urban transformations in its surroundings, going from being the outer border of Madrid to a tourist center of obligatory passage that appears inserted almost in the middle of the same city. This change was due to the widening of the 19th century along the Serrano neighborhood and the extension of Calle de Alcalá. It was declared a historical-artistic monument in 1976, extending its category to the Plaza de la Independencia itself.
The gate, from its final location, was acquiring relevance in the Madrid town from the end of the 18th century, and at the end of the 19th century it was already one of its most characteristic icons that appears in numerous illustrations of the city. Being one of the most representative monuments, in its double condition of looking into the city and outside it. The Puerta de Alcalá has served as a support for all kinds of political and artistic manifestations and numerous historical events have taken place in its vicinity.

Hello Luis,
The gate is impressive and both WS show us interesting close views of some details. The greatest asset of the main photo is the green lawn, the red flowers and the blue sky that provide a bright and beautiful frame around the architecture. I might have cropped a this slice to the left to get rid of the car.
Best regards,
Gert

Hola Luis,
Our hotel in our Madrid visit on 03/2000 was a short walking distance from this imposing gate.
It is wonderfully decorated with the red flowers around it - something we did not see on winter time of our daily stroll around.
Excellent picture on the outcome.
Buenas dias,

Hola Luis,
I like very much this presentation of this famous gate. You had an excellent light there which you have perfectly used. There is an optimal contrast level so the structure feels very realistic. Everything crispy sharp and for those interested in details you have kindly provided more shots in the workshop. I have just shared a night photo of this gate but it was certainly one of my favourite spots.
Excellent work,
