Photographer's Note

Rural Java is wonderful, but can be difficult to reach.

Cianjur is a town and community a couple of hours south of Jakarta. It was the first stop on our trip.

This picture was shot during a walking tour around Cianjur. Destination of the walk was a waterfall, but that's just an alibi, really. What I liked most was the small villages we passed through along the way.

I spent quite some time sitting outside in one of those villages, watching this man at work on his knife. Traditional knives (kris) play an important role in Javanese culture. But on the countryside knives are first and foremost handy working tools.

There's an alternative portrait of this man in the workshop.
