Photographer's Note

The full name of the the museum is Museo de Ambiente Historico Cubano, it is housed in two buildings. The building shown on this picture is on the west side of the Cespedes Park, it is called Casa de Diego Velazquez. It was built in 1514 as a home and office of Diego Velazquez de Cuéllar (c.1465 - c.1524), a Spanish explorer and the first governoror of Cuba. It is the oldest house in Cuba, its dark wooden Moorish window grills and shutters gives it an unusual somber appearance. The second building is connect to the old building through a courtyard. A picture of this courtyard is shown in the Workshop. The museum displays the varied styles and epochs of colonial life, seen through period furnishings from the 16th to the 19th century.
