Photographer's Note

I dedicate this to L’Assessore, a lover of things beautiful.

This was taken in Swanston St. City, during the Emirates Melbourne Cup Parade on the day prior to the running of race. These two young ladies belonged to a group of people who were attired in costumes from the 1930’s.

The Emirates Melbourne Cup is commonly known as the “race that stops a nation”. Run at the world famous Flemington racecourse, the Group 1 Handicap is Australia's richest race and is run over two miles (3200m) on the first Tuesday in November.

The Melbourne Cup has truly become an international race with four internationally trained horses claiming the prize; the first being Dermot Weld-trained Vintage Crop in 1993, then another Weld-trained horse Media Puzzle in his emotional win of 2002 and who could forget the Japanese
quinella of Delta Blues and Pop Rock in 2006.

In 2010 the 150th Melbourne Cup was won by Americain which proved to be a truly international win. Americain was bred in the United States, Australian owned, French trained, and ridden by Gerald Mosse, the French born, Hong Kong based champion jockey. Other internationally trained horses to fill the placings recently are Godolphin's Crime Scene, Herman Brown's Mourilyan, Luca Cumani's Purple Moon and Aidan O'Brien's Mahler.
