Photographer's Note
Street photographer in downtown Lima, 1974. These photographers use very old cameras that have no shutters on the lens, only a cap. They do not use film, only paper. First they take the picture, removing the lens cap for a few seconds, which produces a paper negative. Then they process the paper in a miniature darkroom attached to the back of the camera. When it is fixed, they rinse it in water, wipe it off and put it back inside the camera and make a contact print, again by exposing it by removing the lens cap, and processing again to produce a positive print. You are left with a reasonably sharp, slightly damp print in about 10 minutes. After a few years it turns yellow, because the fixing time is usually inadequate. This was 35 years ago, I imagine things have progressed since then.
Hell s3900 scanner, old Kodachrome.

Hello Chris,
Very nice and useful notes for the history of taking photos.
Fine portrait of a street photographer waiting for a customer.
Very good capture, Vasilis.

Your note is fascinating, the subject of the photo too, - it's a bit too static for my taste, as if not much was happening but I like this kind of old shots, they have very much their place on TE.
Best regards,
Cath.

Fabulous scanning job, Chris. This is a picture of a vanishing trade I'm afraid, but this particular photographer doesn't seem to worry all that much about it.
Excellent note too!
Benny
