Photographer's Note

This picture was taken in February 2004 when I had the opportunity to travel to Brazil near the end of the Carnival. Thanks to a friend of mine that lives there, I was fortunate enough to get some tickets to the winner's parade of the Samba Competition. That evening, there were six winners on parade, of which we saw the last three (including the grand champion). We arrived shortly after midnight to the competition and left around 5:30 in the morning. Each group is several thousand dancers with a multitude of floats. The float in the photograph belongs to the Tijuca Samba "school" (not formally, schools, but from my understanding, neighbourhoods and groups that prepare year-round for the competition). The lighting conditions weren't very good at all with the camera presets dropping to 1/8 or 1/15 shutter speed. I used shutter priority mode to set the camera to 1/30 shutter speed and more or less hoped for the best. That evening, I took about 250 photos before my batteries died out, but I did manage to walk away with a few gems.
