I arrived in Goiás after some hours travelling in a car, two planes, a taxi and a bus. My humble hotel was near the bus station, in front the main jail, but the locals were enjoying the night chatting in chairs in front their peaceful streets, as in the centuries before.
In the next morning I begun to walk going down to the historic center. In this spot of the way I found this beautiful row of colonial houses and a big mandacaru cacti in evidence, even at side of one of the most important monuments of the town, not visible here.

Goiás city (it can be named Old Goiás too) has this name because it has the same name of its state. This name was a "homage" to the local Indians of the region, named Goyá. But this name sound strange and not fit with the name of traditional indian nations of the area, who were extinct when the gold was discovered here in 18tht century.

Cheguei na Cidade de Goiás depois de horas viajando de carro, dois aviões, taxi e um ônibus. Meu hotel simples ficava próximo da rodoviária, diante da prisão. Contudo, naquela mesma noite encontrei os moradores sentados em cadeiras do lado de fora de suas casas, conversando calmamente, como faziam há séculos.
Na manhã seguinte desci para o centro histórico e me deparei com essa linda fileira de casas coloniais com um grande mandacaru em evidência, bem ao lado de um dos mais importantes monumentos da cidade, não visível nessa foto.

A Cidade de Goiás (também chamada de Goiás Velho) tem o mesmo nome do seu estado e o nome veio da tribo Goyá que vivia aqui quando os bandeirantes descobriram o ouro aqui no século 18 e extinguiram a tribo. Contudo, os estudiosos estranham o nome, que não se adequa à nomenclatura das nações indígenas da região.
