Racing is over for the day. . .

Auckland is well named as the ‘City of Sails’ because of its association with round-the-world yacht races and the America’s Cup. Not only that, Auckland has so many yachts and pleasure boats, a number too high to count.

Here you can see one of the yachts, that has just finished racing in a Winter Series of yacht races held on the Waitemata Harbour. It is coming into berth at Westhaven Marina which has secure berthage for 1,800 craft, with 1,400 marina berths and is one of the largest and most well equipped marinas in the southern hemisphere.

In summertime this harbour is a hive of action, with yachts racing and other pleasure craft going off on day-trips to the Hauraki Gulf.

In the distance on the left you might recognise Rangitoto Island by it’s symmetrical volcanic shape, Auckland’s most well known icon.

The Waitemata Harbour is an arm of the Hauraki Gulf, extending west for eighteen kilometres from the end of the Rangitoto Channel. Its entrance is between North Head, in the suburb of Devonport, and Bastion Point in the south.

North Head is seen in the centre of the photo, just to the right of the green hill that is known as Mt Victoria, named after Queen Victoria in the 18th Century.
