Photographer's Note
Pancake Rocks are located at Dolomite Point, near the little settlement of Punakaiki which is located on SH6 (State Highway 6), 40 minutes drive north of Greymouth and 50 minutes south of Westport.
Looking like giant pancakes the curious limestone formations are especially spectacular at high tide. The Pancake Rocks are most spectacular in the Putai area. They were formed 30 million years ago from minute fragments of dead marine creatures and plants landed on the seabed about 2 km below the surface. Immense water pressure caused the fragments to solidify in hard and soft layers. Gradually seismic action lifted the limestone above the seabed. Mildly acidic rain, wind and seawater sculpted the bizarre shapes.
On this day, we drove down the West Coast of the Southern Island from Charleston to Okarito under a heavy rain. The only small appearance of a sunray lasted for 10 minutes when we were visiting this incredible site. Maybe someone up there decided that we deserved some decent light for the occasion…

Salut "Voisin du jour"
Une jolie photo rendue vivante par la présence de la vague. Cette disposition stratifiée des rochers me fait un peu penser à un endroit du Portugal. La Nouvelle Zélande fait bien sur partie de la longue liste des endroits que j'aimerai visiter

Wow, rain looks like the main feature of the West Coast. We drove up to Franz Joseph and could not see a single ray of light and at times not even the road! And next day the chopper flight was off too.
It is a beautiful scenery with the see digging dip underneath of the dolomite. Well done.

Hi Christian. It’s been a long time since I have been to these formations, maybe next time we venture south ;-). Well timed to catch the wave coming through, if I remember correctly last time I was here the waves were too small to put on a show. Nice work and thanks for sharing.

Spectaculaire cette vague ,elle illumine la photo ,donne une belle teintes aux roches qu'elle asperge et apporte un peu de vie dans ce paysage grandiose et tout de même impressionnant.Une bonne composition avec ces différents plans ,je trouve que la "pâleur " de la mer et la brume mettent en valeur ces roches .On doit se sentir bien petit et bien "jeune "face à de tels éléments .

Cette vague arrive vraiment juste à point dans ce décor lunaire. Assez rare de voir des rochers de cette couleur jaune
peut être aurais je essayé de contraster un peu le ciel de façon spécifique

Funny, just as i had....lots of rain. Later i read that this part of the west coast has more than 300 days of rain, so no surprise we both had some of that ;-)
It's an interesting place to visit, i liked the walk around it but deleted all my pictures from there...light was more terrible than in yours...you have at least some detail and colour....well done.

La lumière avait l'air un peu difficile car les nuages en haut sont un peu surex mais cela ne distrait pas autant que cela grâce aux dynanisme de la vague si sort des roches. Les formations sont superbes et valent la visite.

Un étonnant mélange aquatique et minéral. L'ambiance est un peu surréaliste. si on ne voyait pas l'océan au loin, on pourrait se croire sur une autre planète.

Just in time a some nice pancake for breakfast, the at little splash of wave look like wipe cream for the topping :) Perfectly golden brown that how I like my pancake. Beautiful details and texture of the rock formation, the splash of wave freeze in midair, so sharp, so much details. Though it's cloudy, the clarity and light is very well managed and you make the best of it, and it turn out great. Very enjoyable. Thanks

Je ne trouve pas vraiment de ressemblance avec les crêpes (en tout cas les Bretonnes!) mais par contre ces formations rocheuses sont aussi incroyables par leur histoire que par leur aspect.
La lumière très blanche de cette petite éclaircie bienvenue met en valeur leur couleur dorée.
Encore un très beau lieu sauvage que tu nous présentes.

j'ai raté tes derniers posts neo-Zélandais. je ne sais pas si la météo etait de ton coté, mais ce ciel métallique colle idéalement à cette ambiance minérale.
ces piles d'assiettes dont on a du mal à toiser la hauteur semblent piegeuses à souhaits et ce geyser d'eau marine semble vouloir surgir de n'importe quel endroit ! encore un endroit fabuleux de cette ile aux mille facettes !!
