At this nice spot (called Bob´s Cove, I think) on the shore of Lake Wakatipu near Queenstown I had my first encounter with the notorious Sandflies, the only annoying invention of NZs beautiful nature. The most awesome places in NZ are unfortunately the ones with the most sandflies...
My kayak guide at Milford Sound told me, that, according to Maori legend, after Milford Sound was finished by a great carving master, a goddess was outraged because it was so beautiful that anybody who once saw it would stay forever, spoiling this sacred place. So she brought the Sandflies to Milford (from the bottom of a lake, by the way)...
