Photographer's Note
An overcast day looking out onto Lake Te Anau, Fiordland, New Zealand. One of about six thousand digital images taken during two weeks in February on the South Island...
The only rainy day in our trip was this one, where it bucketed down on our way from Dunedin to Te Anau. The clouds were lifting early in the afternoon, when this photo was taken, giving quite a magical effect out over the lake.
These gulls, perched on disused mooring posts, caught my eye.
From Wikipedia:
"Te Anau is a town in the South Island of New Zealand. It is on the eastern shore of Lake Te Anau in Fiordland. Lake Te Anau is the largest lake in the South Island and second only within New Zealand to Lake Taupo. The 2001 census recorded the town's population as 1,857. The town has a wide range of accommodation, with over 3000 beds available in summer. Tourism and farming are the predominant economic activities in the area. Lying as it does at the borders of Fiordland National Park, it is the gateway to a wilderness area famed for tramping and spectacular scenery. Many species of bird life are also found locally, notably the endangered Takahe which can be found at the Fiordland Wildlife Park. Te Anau is connected by highway with Invercargill and Gore to the southeast and east, and Manapouri to the south. Te Anau is the last town passed through when travelling to Milford Sound, which lies 120 kilometres to the north."

I Love the simplicity in this picture and the quiet smoothness of the water. The shoreline almost looks like from a different picture altogether as it is so perfect and straight!

I love your use of form and space here. I'm going to call this a "zen photograph", as it reminds me of the techniques used by the japanese zen caligraphers.

Simply beautiful!
Everything has been said already, I just back-up all the compliments as all of them are well diserved. Lots of sensitivity and poetry here.
But just one thing, why did u have to shoot the 5th bird? ;-)

David and Vincent, The 5th bird was "the bird in the hand". Your know the ancient proverb "a bird in the hand is worth 5 on the post"? or like the chinese vase, a slight imperfection is required for perfection - which is pretty close here. Regards Paul.

I love this photo. Unfortunately I am not able to say why. Perhaps, because it's like life. Perfectly imperfect or maybe imperfectly perfect. If there were the 5-th bird it would lose its charm. Thanks.

POV is very fitting. Composition leaves a nice impression by cleverly manipulating the subject shadows. Exposure, well it's just great.
