Photographer's Note

Auckland, facing west from One Tree Hill.

See the hills in the distance? Well that is the Waitakere Ranges, a chain of hills running approximately 25 km from north to south and 25 km west of central Auckland, New Zealand. The maximum height is 474 m. The Waitakere Ranges and surrounding areas were traditionally known to Maori as Te Wao nui a Tiriwa.

Up there in the Ranges there is an extensive network of bush walks and tracks; superb panoramic views of the east and west coasts; and back to the east, the city of Auckland and the Waitemata Harbour. A road, aptly named Scenic Drive, runs a good portion of the length of the ranges.

If you visit Auckland, this area is a place you must visit. We always take our foreign guests for a day trip up these ranges and over to Auckland’s West Coast , and there you will find the popular surf beaches – Piha, Karekare, Muriwai, and Te Henga (Bethells).

Here are a few photos I have taken on other trips to this area – you might enjoy seeing them.
