Photographer's Note
Maybe this isn’t a TE shot, but I wanted to share this with you. For me, the fun part of being a member of the TE family is I get to have a look at so many different styles, which leads to experimenting with different techniques. It’s been a steep learning curve, sometimes success but most times ordinary results.
I’m an avid reader of boating magazines, I like boats. For years I’ve been looking at full page colour spreads of the latest floating palace or sports cruiser. Invariably they shoot these beautiful boats travelling at speed across inky black water with the boat perfectly exposed. I’ve tried for years, unsuccessfully, to work out how they get that fantastic stylised effect.
Well, now I know.
I was shooting some Australian bush shots this afternoon from a high vantage point over water, as I was wrapping up I saw this cruiser coming along the bay. The shot was taken at the long end of the zoom and there was no background only water. All I had to do was isolate the blue of the water and drop the light level to zero, can you believe it, years of trying to work it out, and as easy as that. If it wasn’t for TE and learning how to push the boundaries, I’d never have known how it was done.

Congratulations for this shot, Phil, the result is fantastic thanks to that black water that you've achieved/created here, and it must have been especially rewarding for you. Excellent sharpness, and that's another accomplishment... cheers ;) Daniel

Hello Peter! Of course it is a TE shot and how it is one, a very good one, and above all that a little speed can never hurt and I was also asking myself how they do it and it is not long ago that I discovered a smiliar idea in a photo book but I am the type of person that forgets when the target approaches and then it is too late but it is also a matter of constant "drill", not only for us as learners but also for professional photographers (I just heard one talking and the person also said that you forget to "see" if stop to practice). It is a wonderful aesthetic photo, I really like it a lot. Well done ... good you came out of the bush. Barbara.

hello peter
pure magic: that trick of yours! :) love the effect. the boat appears hanging in blackness just slightly displaying signs of 'emeraldness' here and there. beautiful contrast!
congratulations!

A successful experiment for sure! Very interesting, and excellent result. The few colours in the waves really make the photo. I could see this in a magazine Peter. Excellent work, original shot for TE.

Hello Peter,
I love this shot and your explanation of it. Simple technique, simple composition, extraordinary result. Without the green highlights, and the tasteful framing, the image would not jump out of the screen as much.

Well Peter, here you are showing us
a very stylish and beautiful photo!
This image looks 'clean' and elegant;
the boat is perfectly exposed and it
contrasts extremelly well with the dark
water. You composed it very well because
we can see how the boat 'cuts' the water
creating some blue 'rays'.
Very good work!
Congratulations!

Hi Peter,
great idea, perfect contrast. I made the observation that all great artists go for black and white sooner or later.
Compliments, Chris

Hi Pete,
The speeding white boat makes a striking line across the dark velvet background.
Very sharp details and lovely textures to this creative image.

Hi Peter,
you have graphically succesful in amking this hot different and exciting. the framing too is suitable anf justified. but mostly i like the white splashes of ripples produced.
what about a diagonal crossing of the boat from one corner to another?
regards,
foozi.
NB: thanks for your view to the shrimp post ( Not Forrrwst Gump :). i think youre right, hopefully to execute when another opportunity arrive.

Hi Peter: This white boat and splashes makes the shot really interesting. The contrast is further enhanced against the totally muted background. Very well seen and framed giving space for the boat to speed ahead in the frame. Great shot and thanks for sharing. Jusni

Ciao Pietro
I was hoping that you'd posted a new photo of you under the table on Xmas Day with 25 J&Ds in your belly and half a lobster hanging out of your mouth. No such luck. So will have to content myself with this excellent photo of a boat. Love the light, the contrast and the almost duotone quality. Hope Santy was kind to you, not sure if he visits naughty boys, but there's always hope.
Love ya
Lisa
