27 February 2005, Luna Park, Milson's Point, Sydney

Kids run down the steps to the front entrance to Sydney's infamous historic amusement venue, Luna Park.

Like the park in Melbourne of the same name, Sydney's Luna Park is a relic from the age of the great amusement parlours of the 19th and 20th centuries-- the likes of Coney Island in New York and the Brighton Pier in England, though it isn't anywhere near as famous. It has also been plagued with controversy, opening, closing and changing locations throughout it's histoy.

It's most recent series of challenges has related to issues of noise pollution. Milson's Point lies directly across the harbour from Sydney, where the Bridge meets the north shore, and is increasingly a popular place for waterfront apartments. Luna Park is hemmed by such buildings and the residents find the sounds of kids hanging out here, "just for fun," at one of Sydney's great cultural icons to be undesirable.
