Photographer's Note

8 January 2006, Wilsons Promontory, Victoria

The Australian Beach. One of this country's great romantic locations. There's something quite unique about the ocean's raw majesty and power, those waves crashing onto long stretches of sandy shoreline, with complete isolation in a way that Australia only can.

I was reminded of this photograph recently while I was in Britain, enjoying the unseasonably dry and sunny weather and chuckling about the thousands of people that descended upon Blackpool and Bournemouth for a plot of sand 3ft by 6ft.

There must have been barely 100 people here on this beach-- spread out over several kilometres in either direction.

This was taken during my extreme tilting phase early last year so some might find the horizon to be a particularly jarring experience.

See the workshop for a landscape view of the Promontory itself.
