Photographer's Note

The Royal Melbourne Show (known affectionately as "The Show" among locals) has been held in the west-Melbourne suburb of Flemington for 150 years.

What began as an agricultural exposition has now evolved into a really big carnival-type affair-- with rides, fairy floss (cotton candy) and oodles of use-once-and-throw-into-a-cupboard inventions. There's only one word to be read on every child's lips: "SHOWBAGS!" Delightful plastic bags filled with natty toys and handfuls of confectionary. In fact, one contained a plastic M-16 assault rifle which a toddler decided to use on me at one point... (wished I'd shot my camera back at him).

Sadly the big kid in me was on vacation the day I visited this place-- perhaps because I went alone. Anyhow I shot this image of some ubiquitous whirling ride (every carnival/amusement park has this one) in the desperate hope of recapturing some of the excitement I once experienced as a wee lad in this place. All I really needed, probably, was for someone to buy me a showbag...

The show's over now but have a look at this website for more information.

Inspired by Lisan, Lee and Alex's recent postings from Toronto and Disneyland respectively.
