Photographer's Note
This is my second offering from our weekend in the Southern Highlands. I’d photographed Fitzroy Falls once before, about a year ago, but I wasn’t happy with the result or the pov, I didn’t think the shot was worth posting on TE. I’ve posted the shot as a workshop for you to judge for yourself.
Some time ago Ian Fegent (ifege) posted this Shot and then Peter Mostert (mozzy27) posted this Shot of the Falls from another much more interesting pov, looking back at the Falls. They had set my curiosity going.
A couple of weeks ago our dear TE friend Bulent, (batalay) posted a lovely shot he’d captured of a foggy day in his front garden HERE .
The Saturday morning at the Burrawang cottage was very overcast with lots of fog around, so, inspired by Bulent’s shot, and the boys shots, I set off to find the pov both Ian and Peter had found for the Fitzroy Falls, hoping as well, that the falls might be shrouded in the same amount of fog we had around the cottage I was staying in. It is about a twenty kilometre drive from where we were staying in Burrawang to the Falls. Armed with Ian and Peter’s shots in mind I set about finding their pov. It took a little while to find the vantage point the boys had shot from, but eventually after some bush bashing in my car and a bit of a walk through the bush I found their pov. In fact there were two spots about four hundred meters apart, the second of these was better as you could see the complete falls.
Sure enough there was still a fair bit of fog/mist in the air but the light was very very flat. Actually if I hadn’t gone to so much trouble to find the boys pov I wouldn’t have posted this shot either. But…….what the heck.
For further info on the Fitzroy Falls go to http://www.highlandsnsw.com.au/towns/falls.html
Hope you like the shot.

Hi Peter,
It seem to be a very difficult photo to take, not only because of the fog, also because of the tree in the foreground to block the view of the falls. However, where there is a challenge it bring out the creative in an artist, and I think you have demonstrated that. The foreground actually give this image it's depth and 3D quality as we go futher back where the water is still very good details but with a soft texture due to the lay of mist and fog. Give it a very mysterious mood and refreshing atmosphere. Good to see you back and I have not been as active, perhaps, when the holidays are over, will have more time. Have a good day.

Hi Peter
Ah! The luck of the northern beach folks - getting the perfect fog for a great photo. I'd been thinking of popping out there in the last couple of weeks but too many other crises (you'll notice I've been sticking to old photos lately). Perfect composition and colour.
cheers

Dearest Pietro
I too have attempted this shot, not as easy as it looks. Your shot is far superior to anything I could come up with. The mist really adds to the atmosphere and a more unique POV. I like how the greenery naturally frames this photo and the vertical frame of course was by far and away the best option. Good to see you posting and to see such superb quality shots. Enjoy your weekend my friend.
Love ya work

Hello Peter,
I like how you have framed the falls through the gap in the vegetation; also the gradual change in contrast as we move from the foreground to the background. The misty atmosphere surrounding the falls brings an ethereal effect to the image and is most attractive. Your efforts are very well rewarded with this shot.

Hi Peter,
There is a real gem hidden in that green lush forest, you know?:)
I tried a workshop for you for reasons which will be obvious when you are going to have a look at it.
In case you might be interested about details I can email you some more information but there was nothing really spectacular in what I did.
I wonder, do you think my version is closer to your memory of the place?
Thanks and take care,
Nelu

Hi Peter,
you are right: the falls in vertical frame, with the fog creates a really magic atmosphere and makes tender tone to the greenery. Excellent choice, my friend!
Have a nice WE

Hello Stranger,
So this is where you have been hiding at the bottom of this stunning falls.
All the lush vary shades of green make a beautiful natural frame for this three-tiered beauty.
The fog and mist give this impressive vertical presentation a dreamy feel.

G'Day, Peter,
Nice photo, I think the misty look is great, I did a quick workshop with a border, Sorry !!Curious when I enlarged what is that brown mass in the tree, pine cone? The water looks great, glad you didn't slow it down too much.Look great as a poster.

Dear Peter,
I think your POV is great, giving a strong feeling of depth and a sense of the height of the fall. Thank you for your note: It is very detailed and very frank.
On the other hand, I felt like the shot was over-exposed a little. I tried to give an alternative as a workshop.
TFS.

Hi Peter,
Fog is a challenging thing. Sometimes it creates a special atmosphere, sometimes just eats away contrasts. I guess it is somewhere in between on this case. This PoV is excellent. Workshops have more contrast but give a feeling that they are result of somewhat forced postprocessing. While you say that your other original is less dynamic, the dizzying angle well compensates it.

Hello Peter,
The waterfall is different from the two other versions, and is remarkable. The fog gives a charm and a particular mystery. The imposing panorama is harmoniously put in image. I like also the photograph of Batalay. Very good work. Cheer.
Have a nice day.

Hello Peter,
If I remember correctly, the etymology of photography is rooted comes from painting with light. If so, the links that you've cited (and thank you for citing mine) attest to the different moods one can capture in different atmospheric settings. The mist and fog you capture in this image of Fitzroy Falls has a mystique that the others don't have. There is a glow where the water crashes onto the rocks, that there is none in others. Even a severely cropped shot of just the central portion, although it would not have the resolution, could be a featured photo. I'll do a quick ws to see how that would work.
Warm regards, Peter.

Hello Peter,
what a high small fall. You have frozen the water very well with the long silky whiteness.
The beauty is well framed between the green branches of trees from a distance.
Nice misty surroundings is seen too.
What a feeling to enjoy the sound and have that peaceful feelings.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for this post of a remarkable Aussie waterfall, one which I've not heard of or seen before. It looks similar to Purlingbrook Falls here in southern QLD. I like how you have used the native foliage to naturally frame the cascades. The mist drifting through the top of the photo adds a lot of interest and really makes the falls seem if they are hidden, lost in a remote valley. Well done Peter.

Hello Peter
Good to see some good healthy competition amongst us, I personally would have liked to see it without the fog but the POV is excellent and in particular the capture of the bottom section of the falls, you must have had to stand up on the fence to get so much of it, well done under the available light conditions. Cheers Peter, enjoy your Sunday

Hi Peter,
The composition of this waterfall photo a bit similar to mine from Japan :). Very attractive mist around. Nice atmosphere, i am almost wet with the water droplets.

Hi Peter. Almost like an ephemeral world where even the rocks appear to be immaterial. A gentle vision thanks to the diffused light and the fog which seems to have joined earth and sky in front of our eyes.To boot you did have a beautiful and elegant waterfall in front of you. well done. Regards. Klaudio.
