Photographer's Note
Lockhart's Gap Road is the route which I take to get to the farm at Mitta Mitta. It takes one through the mountains between the small dairy producing town of Tangambalanga, and the Omeo Highway, where one can choose to go north to Tallangatta or south to the Dartmouth Dam or to Mitta Mitta. Leaving Tangambalanga the road eventually enters thick eucalypt forest and winds its way up along a mountain's side to this lookout point, before descending steeply through some tight S-bends into the flat dairy cattle country again. I stopped on this occasion, just as I had before beginning the climb into the mountains when I took my shot for an earlier upload called Rainbow Near Tangambalanga. The wild weather had made the drive up to the lookout quite dangerous, as trees were losing branches that were falling into the road. On arriving at the lookout, the weather was just beginning to clear in the east and a double rainbow lingered long enough to take some more shots.
I was in such a rush (needlessly, as it turned out) to take this shot that I didn't reset the aperture to something larger than f18, and so the shot was made at ISO800. So, I've had to apply a little noise reduction to improve the dark areas of the sky. I boosted the contast and saturation somewhat to bring the sunlit area up to the way I remembered the scene as the sun burst through.
The map coordinates show the precise point where the photo was taken, looking due East.

Hello Andrew,
A very pleasing light in this fine composition. I like the delicate shades of yellow and green and, of course, the double rainbow is a definite bonus. Very good pp work. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Andrew,
quite a good capture. I like the view of the wooded hills lit by a tender warm light and of course the rainbows too. I think you really menaged to get the right atmosphere. (In spite of the high iso) Thank you for the coordinates: it's good to be able to see in the map where a shot is taken.
(When one has not a GPS to get the coordinates you can go at:
Here
and move the map untill the cross at the center is exately in the spot where you were, and you can read the coordinates above the map. (it's a web page created by Lasse (ellelloo)

Hi Andrew
A superb catch of the colourful double rainbow here. Good sharpness, colour, & saturation. I hope the fires are under control now. Last I looked, parts of the Dandenongs & Daylesford were alight.

Hi Andrew
I can imagine your rush at seeing the double rainbow. Such things happen to me too. The tree on the left frames really well allowing the eye to be drawn to the rainbows. The light is stunning.

Hi Andrew,
Lovely take on the double rainbow, the light across the valley is so pretty. You've done justice to just how wonderful the Australian bush can look.
Excellent POV, the look down the valley takes me there immediately. So too your composition, a very nicely presented shot.
It looks like f/18 causes you the same problems it does me when it comes to sharps. It's not that the shot is soft, it just looks
like the rendering on the trees lacks some definition. I've definitely scrapped apertures above f/10. Ah, the joys of digital photography.
Nonetheless a very beautiful capture.

Peter

Andrew,
Thanks so much for your kind words and it's an honnor to be among your favorites. I have witness such beuatiful show mother nature put on a few weeks ago, Unfortunately, I was not in any location that I can incorporate a nice composition, I was at home, so I just ran out there and tried to find and interesting enough composition and took a couple of shots. It turn out alright, but I would rather have your POV with the beautiful and layers of mountains as backdrop to showcase the double rainbows. I wonder just how easy it would to go down there and find that pot of gold. Fantastic view and excellent quality photo. Thanks so much.

Hi Andrew, this is a great capture. The sky, depth of field and beautiful control of light are faultless. And on top of that you get a double rainbow - again perfectly captured. It still looks good to me despite the ISo/aperture issues. I've been having this conversation with Pete about the "sweet-spot" on a lens not being more than f/8-f/10, it's frustrating when something comes along like this and you dont have time to change the settings to get them pin-sharp. Despite all that, you must be so proud of this one, thanks for sharing it, Lisa.

Hi Andrew,
You have captured the rainbow bright and clear. Usually they look faint on photos compared to what eyes saw. Also the tree tops have spectacular light.
It seems that using hig ISO accidentally happens to all of us every now and then.

Hello Andrew,
The composition, with the f/g trees leading into the shot from the left, towards the overlapping, horizontal layers of differing hues, is beautiful.
The rainbow is an added bonus and how remarkable that it follows the curve of the trees.
You have done well here!
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Plenty of these in Auckland at the moment, trouble is im on the way to work I can't photograph the rainbows. Excellent double barrel rainbow with superb shades of green vegetation. Looks sublime for 800 ISO. We have done it all when we are in a rush.

If only we knew in advance how much time we had! I once tried to shoot a rainbow in a hurry, of quite a wide landscape, with only f5.6 and too much was out of focus. :( The high ISO you can deal with later. It's worked out well and the light on the trees is just at the bottom of the rainbow. You have framed the image well with the foreground tree on the left giving plenty of depth and added interest.

Hello Andrew, Very nice capture & well framed, even without the icing on the cake, the rainbow or should I say the double rainbow. It's been so dry around here lately that I thought you must have gone interstate but I quickly looked at the date taken, that explains it. I like the light & warm colours, even with a dark grey sky the sun has done a marvelous job on the FG trees.
A beautiful scene well captured.
Take care

Matching the previous critique, I had to write about this similar yet different scene. The subtlety of the light is evident here also in the delicate shading and sculpturing of the forest and the trees. The tree on the left is wonderful and its colours and detail remind me of trees seen in old oil paintings.Subtle and beautiful work. Regards. Klaudio.

Hi andrew,
Haven't we seen so many rainbows in our life but most of the time there was no camera or we were at the wrong spot. But look at this, this light in front, the mix of green colours all scattered around and that soft gradient sky, those hills on the far right seems to go forever...really perfect.
Of course there is always a double rainbow, the trick is to capture it under a right angle and that is exactly what you captured here...great shot, wonderful light.
