Today another one of the cockatoo family that visits our yard every year. It is Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo (Zanda funerea). They are one of the largest parrots and mature ones are about 65 cm long.I have posted a photo of one previously (maybe the same bird) but this one was more in the open.
They live out in the local forests but come every year when this hakea tree's nuts are ready for eating (see the workshop for a close up of the pods) - it is their favourite food and we hear loud crunching as they crack the hard outer shell.
They do make a mess of the path below the tree but are fairly rare so we are happy to see them each year.
As with yesterday's photo this was taken hand held with my big 150-500 lens but only on 300mm this time.
