A year ago the lakes of Kinchega national park were dry. This year due to rain far to the north in Queensland the lakes have filled with water. Shortly after pelicans and other water birds started to appear despite the lakes being 500 km from the nearest coast.
In this photo one pelican was sitting a log in a water way between 2 of the lakes. Another pelican came cruising along. Companion? It just ignored the one on the log and sailed on past.
Birds like pelicans use lakes like these for breeding.
