Photographer's Note

I'm from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where seagulls are very common because we are very close to the sea. I never thought to see a seagull in Chicago since it Chicago is 800 miles from Atlantic Ocean.

But they are very common there like in New York City. And this birds in Chicago make me think about the correct name.

I read about it and the correct name is gull for the species of Laridea birds family. The term seagull is a colloquial name since many of them live close to the sea.

In USA there are 22 species of gulls. The Pacific coast is home to the aptly named Western Gulls. The familiar Ring-billed Gull nests all across the northern states and Canadian provinces. Herring Gulls breed along the Great Lakes and Northeast waterways (the specie we saw here), while the Laughing Gulls nest all along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.

Here in Brazil the gulls are named Gaivotas and I only saw than close to the sea.
