Photographer's Note

Cecret Lake in Little Cottonwood Canyon, near Alta, Utah. I took this picture several months ago, or rather these pictures--it's a stitch of three portrait-wise shots. I forgot about the potential for a stitch for a while, though. This was the result.

Cecret Lake is located in the Albion Basin, which is famous in Utah for beautiful wildflowers. I got there a bit late this year--they were mostly dead when we went--but the scenery and the lake were still beautiful. The weather, however, was not. It was an ugly overcast day, and we only saw the sun a couple times once we got to the lake. It ended up raining on us as we were leaving, as you can see in this photo.

However, for just under a minute, the sun broke through the clouds and lit up the lake and the hill just beyond it. Devil's Castle in the background never saw the sun while we were there.

In some ways this is a very well-kept secret in Utah. The lake is quite lovely, and Devil's Castle is a beautiful backdrop. The hike is less than a mile and a half round-trip, and it's only a 20-minute drive from the Salt Lake Valley to get to the trailhead. Given those bonuses, I'm somewhat surprised that most of my friends have never heard of it. Even so, there are still lots of hikers there every weekend, so if you're looking for solitude I'd go for Maybird Gulch Lakes a little lower down the canyon. But either way, Cecret Lake is definitely worth the short hike.
