Sunset Flood

James River - or Jim River - or Dakota River - or Etazipokase Wakpa
near Mitchell, South Dakota

A river of many names .. Etazipokase Wakpa in (I believe) Lakota .. literally translates as the "unnavigable river" ... which is very accurate .. this is the longest unnavigable river in the world.

The river was named the James river (also called the Jim river) by a railroad worker. It was later officially changed to the Dakota river .. but not officially enough to take over local parlance .. or most maps I have seen ...

For my Spring Break vacation last week I took my smallest daughter and headed off the 600 miles for parents place in South Dakota .. and then up to see my brother in Minnesota .. not as good of photographic vacation as I had hoped thanks to my flu, schedule and weather (ah well ..) but one of the more striking things I encountered was the flooded river. ... maybe 10 times the typical size of the small river .. thanks to a massive March blizzard and rapid melt .. the typical spring flooding of this area was certainly exaggerated this year.

This image was just a snapshot as my Dad was showing me the flooding .. it was just going to be a "test" image as I was going to come back and set up later .. but it keeps bringing me back to it so I thought I'd start these with it.
