Photographer's Note

Jefferson Notch in northern New Hampshire is not a spectacularly scenic drive. But at the height of autumn color it does reserve some wonderful surprises for the traveler who is willing to slow down and look more closely.

The Yashica 24 twin lens reflex camera with which I took this photo is a predecessor to their famous MAT124 camera. The 24 indicates that it is optimized for 220 film, yielding 24 exposures per roll. It is capable of producing images of superb quality, but the lens is susceptible to flare, requiring careful shading from off-axis light sources. Film flatness can also be a problem. Fortunately, in this case everything worked right and the resulting image is sharp enough to print at 30"x30".
