Photographer's Note
A slightly color-enhanced photo of the Chain of Rocks Barge Canal which parallels the Mississippi River near Hartford, Illinois. Here we see the downbound (on the left) "Jimmy Sauls" of Kirby Transportation out of Texas pushing three chemical or petroleum barges, while Ingram Barge Lines "Midland" pushes a whole bunch of barges upbound toward Alton, Illinois. Millions of tons of freight are moved through this canal system every year. Much of the downbound freight winds up in New Orleans, LA awaiting trans-shipment to somewhere else, while much of the northbound freight ends up in Minneapolis, MN.
