Photographer's Note

I thought it would be good to commemorate the feast of the Assumption with a photo of this very wonderful statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. The feast of the Assumption celebrates that, as the Blessed Mary's life came to an end God assumed her, body and soul, into Heaven.

This photo was taken at sunrise at the Shrine of Our Lady of Peace in Santa Clara CA. The statue is actually silver but the sunrise added a very nice golden glow.

The Shrine is right at the junction of Great America Parkway and Highway 101. You can find other pictures of the Shrine and the priest who helped bring it into being--although I'm sure he'd credit God-- at Our Lady of Peace Shrine
The statue is about 30ft tall and faces the freeway.

There's contact information for the church and shrine at this link

Also it would probably be a good idea to point out the error in two commonly held myths about Catholics.

1) Catholics don't worship Mary
Catholics know that Mary lived a life of perfect service to God and hence is a very good
example of how to live our lives. We also know that when we pray to her all she can do is ask Our Lord to grant our requests. Because she is a human, albeit the only one who has perfectly served God, we don't worship her, we only worship God. Mary, good though she is, is a creature just like us. We pray to Mary and the other saints just as we would ask our friends on earth to help us and to pray to God for us. Mary and the other saints just happen to be in Heaven.

2) Catholics don't worship statues
We use pictures and statues to help us think of those we love. Just as many people have photos
on their desk at work of their families Catholics have pictures and statues of the saints we love because of their devotion to God, a devotion we try to emulate. When you look at that picture of your family you don't feel love for the photo, you feel love for the people in the photo. So too when we Catholics have pictures or statues of saints and Jesus it's for the same reason, to be reminded of our family, our friends, and our God.
