Photographer's Note

Yet another Grand Canyon photograph adding to TrekEarth’s collection.

The Desert View Watchtower is a popular location, but some stray from the paved paths and safety-railed edges. Enough of them have wandered from the coddled, curated areas to establish a social use trail leading down from the rim along the promontory at the Watchtower’s base. The challenge draws the adventurous and the photographer seeking a different/unique image of the canyon. What both find is that the seeming end of the promontory is only the first in a series teasing and drawing them on. “I’ll just go to that point and return” is overruled by the temptation to see what the newly revealed point will show.

My desire for a sunset photograph and a different star-studded image warred with the fear of a misstep on the climb out in the dark. As age brings caution more slowly that the dropping sun drags down the already cold temperature, and as ice and snow still graced portions of the trail, I reluctantly climbed back to the rim.
