Photographer's Note
May 22: Haines, AK
Soon, we caught up with the only humpback whale that had been spotted in the canal that day. According to our captain he/she was a juvenile that had recently been separated from his/her mother. Now, you would think It would be easy to get a nice photo this close to the whale, but I was not that fortunate. First of all, they spend most of their time under water and come up just to breathe. Furthermore it is difficult to estimate exactly where they’ll surface again.
We followed this one for quite a while. This is the closest I could get to capturing a lobtailing - let me correct myself, breaching - or is it lunging? You can see the evidence of the splash of water behind the visible portion of the whale. Now, according to Wikipedia, lobtailing is the act of a whale lifting its tail out of the water and then bringing it down onto the surface of the water hard and fast in order to make a loud slap. Large whales tend to lobtail by positioning themselves vertically downwards into the water and then slapping the surface by bending the tail stock. So, perhaps this was not lobtailing because the body was still visible. A breach or a lunge is a leap out of the water, also known as cresting. The distinction between the two is fairly arbitrary: researcher Hal Whitehead defines a breach as any leap in which at least 40% of the animal's body clears the water, and a lunge as a leap with less than 40% clearance. Qualitatively, a breach is a genuine jump with an intent to clear the water, whereas a lunge is the result of a fast upward-sloping swim that has caused the whale to clear the surface of the water unintentionally. So I will settle on lunging.
The workshop for this entry includes:
A Swimming Elephant?: Doesn't this whale look like a swimming elephant? This is as close as I could get to it.
Meanwhile, Two Pigeon Guillemots: Meanwhile, these two pigeon guillemots were floating close to our boat. Perhaps, they were whale watching like us.

Hi Murat,
funny reportage and note from your whale watching adventure.
I had similar experiences on my whale watching trips so after a while I gave up on them entirely.
Great setting with colorful mountain scenery in the distance.
Very good reportage,
M

Hello Murat,
A couple of whales on the bay, and that was lucky - because I learnt not always a whales excursion result with such sight.
The landscape is an outstanding terrain picture.
Best regards,
Ike

Hello Murat,
A wonderful and stunning landscape with those green slopes and snowy peaks. The colours are also well-saturated. The blue water makes a good foreground and we also get a tiny glimpse of a whale. Well captured.
