Photographer's Note

With its fierce, haunting idols, this sacred site (Puuhonua O Honaunau) on the black-lava Kona Coast certainly looks forbidding. On a self-guided tour of the site -- which has been restored to its precontact state – I saw the reconstructed thatched huts, canoes, and idols, and felt the power of old Hawaii.
