Photographer's Note
I am really sorry macjake for stealing your title, I just thought this will be so appropriate here, although it is a completely different photo than yours.
It so happens that since many years I live next to a coast. It was the Pacific Ocean, Baltic Sea (also close to the North Sea), Celtic Sea (also close to the Atlantic Ocean) now Irish Sea respectively. Sitting on a beach was always quite boring to me but I do that from time to time. In California I found it very entertaining to watch beach birds. There were two types of them exhibiting similar behavior. When the wave was coming back to the ocean they were running very quickly after it trying to find something in the sand with their thin long beaks. When the wave came back again they were running away on their tiny long legs. They were running a lot and it always made me laugh.
I have found out the name of this bird species. It is Long-Billed Curlew, Numenius americanus. They are native to North America.
It is my second but probably last bird photo so that is why I dont intend to create a TrekNature account. This photo was taken in the afternoon on the Pismo Beach along the central coast of California. In the workshop I present one more photo taken in the morning at the same beach. The light was different. The workshop photo presents a couple (I believe male and female are slightly different) having a morning jog on the beach.
Coming back to the title: in one of the previous uploads I have mentioned, how great is the weather in Southern California. Now it may come as a surprise for those who did not visit California that the water in the ocean along the Californian coast is very cold all year long.
*** update 08.08.2011 ***
I have just discovered that the bird has a European cousine: Eurasian Curlew, Numenius arquata.

Hello Mariusz,
nice the view of the bird as standing on the sandy beach of Pismo beach.Reminds a similar scene in Sar-El-Seix with an other kind of bird of course.A good snapshot with lovely colours and light.

Hi Mariusz
hey, no problem at all, any way that we can help each other out! :)
i can certainly appreciate the difficult nature in capturing this photo, i presume you were at the end of your focal range?
birds....man...they are hard to capture! I really do like the lighting in this shot, that helped out alot.
Very interesting bird to view, i can't help but keep looking at this guy. I take it his long beak is to capture fish.
PS - you know how you added the extra workshop photo, and created that link in your write up below....how you do you that? i"m not very computer literate.
cheers
Craig

Hi Mariusz,
a great capture of this instant, the curlew on the beach did not have to be an easy aim, but you hunted it skillfully.
We can see perfectly all the details of his long beak, his plumage and his legs, while he seems to pose for the photographer.
I like the spontaneity of this natural scene, and the splendid achievement.
Welll done, my friend.
Best regards,
Josep

Hi Mariusz
It's always difficult to shoot wildlife and you did a great job here. I love the golden tones and the reflection is a little added bonus. Great title, I'm sure Craig won't mind you pinching it. The bird does indeed look very chilled out. I'd love to be there chilling out with him.
Have a great week

Zimna woda w Pacyfiku - kąpałam sie w Long Beach, ale rzeczywiście przejechałam wzdłuz oceanu tysiące kilometrów szosą panamerykańska, i kapiących sie bylo niewielu, raczej surferzy.

Hi Mariusz.
A spectacular catch and I think hard, I guess the bird in motion should not be an easy piece.
The picture is very clear, we can see the details of its long beak, plumage and long legs, while pareccia watch you.
Beautiful natural scenery with the diagonal formed by the wave breaking in the wet sand. Well done.
Have a great evening.
Best regards.
Luis.

Pozdrawiam.

Good morning mariusz,
A type of bird we jave its "relative" living in Israel and the area, we call those "Khartuman", try to pronounce this... just joking.
Fantastic picture as it stood on the water-edge, not easy to catch such a pose with so beautiful details shown.
Wish you a nice new day,
Ike
