Photographer's Note
This was taken just after sunrise of the Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Central Oregon on my latest tour this past weekend. The weather patterns have been incredibly wet in this region and all of the Northwest this year, and due the saturated ash beds the colors were incredibly colorful and vibrant.
This has been and will always be my favorite hillside with the beautiful lines and curves that lead your eye as far as you can see into the Ochocco Mtn. Range in the rear.

Hello Steven,
It's hard to believe this is a natural formation. The hills resemble colossal mushrooms, with reddish concentric contour lines representing different elevations. The composition, exposure, colors and resolution all collaborate to make this a first rate photo, worthy of the National Geographic (and I should know, being an NGS author).
Warm regards,
Bulent

Hello Steven,
Indeed, this is an incredible landscape. The bands of colour stand out beautifully against the BG and blue sky. The flowing shapes have been very well captured with intetesting long diagonal dark shadows in the folds. An excellent quality and fine picture.

Hi Steven
Another good one of the painted hills, definitely a place that I would like to visit if ever I go in the United States one day. I like the vivid colors from which come out a contagious sensation of exultation. The nature seems to wear her best wardrobe, the fire of the hills against the blue of the sky is fabulous, strongly eye-catching and providing an enchantment that goes, after the eyes, deep to the soul.
Congratulations!

Hello Steven,
A really incredible landsape. I heard a lot about these painted hills and here you succeeded to share the colors and the strangeness of this place.
Looking to your parameters, I am a bit surprised you closed so much the diaph. Looking to the size of the pixel on the D90 sensor, if you close more than f/13, f/16 you do not gain more DOF but only losing small details due to diffraction.
Yves.

Hello Steven
A spectacular warm vs cold color contrast between the reddish orange Painted Hills & the blue sky. Good sharpness and superb saturation & density. I like the repetition of the banded layered patterns. Tfs!

Hi Steve - I was having a look through your Oregon gallery, specifically to see if you had any redwood shots. I love those huge trees and it is a dream of mine to see them with my own eyes. Anyway, I couldn't find any but I did see many shot of these incredible hills. They are so beautiful and another good reason to visit! I really can't pick out the best shot, there are so many. I've gone for this one because of the excellent definition and colour contrasts. Beautiful! Warm regards rosemary

Hello Steven,
the lines produce a really hypnotic effect. The shadows of the clouds also add some depth by the way they distribute light and dark area. Finally, the wide framing, with the inclusion of the sky and its fluffy clouds give it another dimension than the pure abstract geometry of the site.
Have a nice day
Emmanuel
