Photographer's Note

Devil's Club filters the light which penetrates the understory of the rainforest. This huge plant is a source of cortisone, which the Native peoples steeped into tea for treatment of arthritis. It is covered with sharp spines, even on the leaves. It blooms in the summer and produces bright red berries in the late fall. It's ubiquitous throughout SE Alaska. This particular plant grew twenty feet over my head..
