Photographer's Note

Walking from the Johnston Ridge Observatory towards the Truman Trail that overlooks Spirit Lake you are nearly 2 miles from the center of the crater walls. When the rock is extruded from the cone one can watch them spiral down from the cone as smoke and flame dominates the scene. I have found that on the 4th of July is one of the better times to visit as the Indian Paintbrush are vibrant as they line the trails in the area, also, keep an eye out for Elk on both sides of the trail. The best times to view the Elk at a close proximity is as sun rises, and if you do arrive before the Observatory opens, there is no daily fee charged.
