Photographer's Note
Hello TE,
One of the things I love to see when I go on a road trip is city art and sculpture like this one that is next to the Post Office in Tonopah, Nevada. Alot can be learned about regional areas from the art and sculpture on display and in fact many are placed around towns just to lure travelers from their cars to go exploring the local area. Tonopah is the largest little town located in central Nevada.
For instance, Tonapah is called the "Queen of the Silver Mining Camps". The town began as a silver mining towen around 1900. It attracted the likes of old legends such as Wyatt Earp, who was a gambling dealer in the town. Silver declined in price and the mines went bust. A second mining boom sprang up in the 1970's with Anaconda mining molybdenum but it went into decline too.
This sculpture commemorates Big Bill Murphy's heroic sacrifice in the Belmont Mine fire in 1911.

hi Karen,
A great POV to show this statue off, with rich colours of both the monument and the blue sky.
I, like you, love exploring and finding new and interesting sculptures, then finding out what they mean. Its a great way of learning some fascinating history, like you have presented us here. Thanks for sharing!
All the best

HOwdy Karen,
Yes indeed, an attractive metal realistic sculpture in a town off the beaten path and part of the mining historical culture.
Nicely composed,
Cheers,
