Photographer's Note
I have a rule that I don't post a new photo until I have met my obligations of finishing up with my email and my critiques. I am fairly well caught up at this time but I will be behind a few days from now, but I always catch up. Trek Earth is a big committment and I intend to pull my weight like everyone else does.
This "Cactus Abstract" photo was taken at the Denver Botanic Gardens at the American Southwest Desert portion of the gardens. I was planning on posting this photo of these very small cactii (taken with a 150mm macro lens) sometime soon and since they were relevant to my American Southwest theme I figured that now was a good time to post the photo. I did perhaps oversharpen this photo, but I didn't like the softer rendition. The feedback I receive is always interesting and very useful. (The metadata is wrong. I took this photo last Summer).

The oversharpening effect makes it seem like a drawing, and I love it. The colors are so rich but I've seen cactus that look this vibrant so I think its absolutely the way you "saw" the subject. I think its great Stan! P.S. thanks for noticing my comment yesterday, it made me feel cool. :-)

Hi Stan.
A very interesting work. I like above all the composition, with tis repetitive subject that works really well. I don´t know if colors are naturals, but the effect you have obtained is very good. Congratulations and best regards.
Angel.

It really does look like artwork, if I hadnt read the note I would have thought that it was a picture of a painting! Its an interesting effect.

Hello Stan -
Here I believe the over sharpening does work. What I really find interesting is all of the colors in the cacti - what type of cacti are they? I do like the composition with the large blue green specimen in the middle and the smaller cacti supporting it. The off center position of the main portion of the cacti group really makes the image work. I look at this and visualize a dead center composition and then this one and it makes me believe that following the rules really makes sense. Enter this in the fall contest and see how it does, I suspect it will float to the top and give AK a run for the money. What is there not to like about this image? Bravo, well done!
Thank you for sharing.
John

Hello Stan,
A colorful photo of this cacti & they are all packed together. Do they grow on rocks? I found similarly looking cacti while hiking in Switzerland last autumn. Regards. Latiff.

This is an outstanding photo Stan. The colors and the contrast is really beautiful. I like the composition with the smaller buds surrounding the large one in the center. This is something I wouldn't mind hanging on my wall. Great shot.

Very interesting photo. It is a great abstract with really good color. It almost looks like a photo of a painting. I think the oversharpening works but I would like to see a version that isn't also, just to compare. Really nice work.

Hi Stan,
I’m a color fanatic, so I wasn’t able to ignore this tremendous shot. I first taught, when I saw it at thumbnails size, that it was a Photoshop trick, like a »reverse polarizing dual level with mix channels», but after reading your note, I now understand that these cactus are "born" colorful! How cool it is!
The soft rainbow shades offer a visual treat! I like the spot you have chosen for your composition, with the big one slightly higher and all the «baby cactus» gathering around. Your title is definitely relevant. Well done and highly interesting!

C'est très joli et graphique comme composition, Stan.
Beaucoup de couleurs, mais bien assorties et qui se mélangent très bien.
C'est une photo astucieusement cadrée.
Have a great week-end.
Daniel.

Stan,
Your title is right, this image is very abstract.
Colors are nice, added to the compo you made an actual painter job.

Hi Stan,
Looks almost like a painting. That so called oversharpen does not really bothers me, i think it makes this image even stronger and gives it more a painting look.
Wonderful composed in an excellent framing...really good.
Have a nice weekend, Henk

Well done Stan; it looks as if it could be a painting. I really like how the cactus fills up the frame, and it forms a really interesting pattern (isn't nature amazing).

The diversity of colors are amazing here and his makes a very rich picture of what is usually not a very colorfull vegetal (aprt from their flowers). Good choice of the large cactus surrounded by smaller ones.
All the best,

Hi Stan
I know these plants but I never saw it so colorful! Wonderful color palette, the repetitive leaves create a nice visual effect with good choice of vertical framing. It goes to my theme 'more fav.picture 1'.

Oh I wish I could say that the last two months or three I have kept up so assidiously with critiqueing - but the first two years I did my best - life just seems quite superheated right now.
I look at images from many different perspectives but my quintessential judgement is about what happens in print - the intenet is a simple rendition of any image - not even a tenth as exciting for me as holding and looking at a medium to large scale image - I have no difficulty whatsoever about placing this amongsrt my favourites this year - whatever you may have done with it sharpening wise - I love it visually and I love the associations which come from it for me - it oscillates between nature's three dimensional masterpiece to two dimensional design, the colours are wonderful and excite my senses. I find it as inspiring as the most opulant arts designed and craft produced wallpaper design, as translucent as a a jewel encrusted crown and as fascinating mathematically as so many other remarkable natural phenomena ........beautiful!!!
best wishes Kev

Stan,
It looks like a painting. The sharpening in this case worked pretty well.
First time seen a cactus with these colours. Amazing what we learn in TE.

Hi Stan,
Wonderful macro with exceptional color combination and marvelous details your thorny subject. The color plants look much like cabbage but I'm sure they do not go well with corn beef.

Hi Stan,
What an amazing and colorful cluster of plants!! The stong graphic detail makes it seem like it must be a drawing; I like the effect a lot.

Amazing colours and vibrancy. The composition is perfect. I love the central big one. It would be good to compare it to the unsharpened image. They look good enought to eat.
