Point Mugu Rock is a large rock formation that was formed when Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) was built and cut through the mountain that now resides on the other side of PCH. Before PCH was built, a road went around the rock. Mugu Rock is located just a few miles near the northwest tip of PCH before it veers north towards Oxnard.

By 1940, work was complete. The original road around the rocks survived as a scenic bypass (it's since eroded away), but the main highway now sliced through Point Mugu, leaving only a rocky stub where the Santa Monica Mountains once thrust themselves into the Pacific.

Point Mugu Rock is a large rock formation that was formed when a 200 foot deep cut was made into the rocky ridge from October 1937 to February 1940. Prior to the modern day PCH at Mugu Rock drivers went around a 275 foot radius curve.

A countless number of car commercials have been filmed on Pacific Coast Highway over the years, especially the stretches near Point Mugu Rock with infinity views of the Pacific, just a few miles north of the Malibu city limits. Just about every Malibu resident has, at one time or another, been waived to a stop by a sheriff’s deputy or California Highway Patrol officer directing traffic for a film shoot, waiting a minute or two until a scene was finished.
