Photographer's Note

This is Arlington West, a memorial to soldiers killed in Iraq, constructed every Sunday morning on the beach in Santa Monica by Veterans for Peace, then removed later in the day. There is a cross for each American soldier killed, so about 2,500 crosses now. When I took this photo there last year, there were just over 1,000. If Iraqi civilian casualties were included, the memorial would stretch for miles. For Memorial Day last weekend, a lighted candle was placed in front of each cross at sunset.
