Photographer's Note
The entrance to Pacific Park on the Santa Monica pier. There are 12 rides, including a Ferris Wheel that provides an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean and a roller coaster, featured in the sign here. Santa Monica has had a number of piers, but the current one is actually comprised of two adjoining piers. The first, Municipal Pier was opened in Sept., 1908, but had no amenities. The adjoining pier (Pleasure Pier, later Newcomb Pier) was built in 1916. The carousel was built in 1922 and featured 44 hand-carved horses. It's still functioning. It was rebuilt in 1990, however. A functioning calliope plays the music. The pier has been featured in a number of movies, as it's frequently used by the film industry. Perhaps its most famous appearance is in Titanic (although there's only a photo of it). It's a fun place to spend an afternoon, and is a must-see on a list of places to visit if you're in Southern California!
